Coving & Cornice in Beckenham: How They Differ

The terms coving and cornice are often used interchangeably, so it's understandable why people might be confused about the differences between them. The fact is, that while they both serve a similar function in creating a transition between wall and ceiling, they go about it in different ways.

Coving is typically the simpler of the two and, as often as not, includes a concave section in the centre that extends for its entire length. If there is embellishment above or below that, it is usually kept to a minimum.

Cornice, on the other hand, can be extremely elaborate with detailed flora and other motifs and a high degree of embellishment all around. And unlike coving, which normally extends a roughly equal distance down the wall and out into the ceiling, cornice work may extend a long way out into the ceiling but only a short way down the wall.

Essentially, coving is used when the designer is trying to establish a clean, minimalist feel, while cornice is used to create a sense of opulence or grandeur.
