Coving & Cornice in Hastings: How Are They Different?

Though coving and cornice have been around in one form or another for thousands of years, there is still some confusion over whether they are the same thing. They are not. While they serve the same baseline function of creating a transition between wall and ceiling, they go about it in different ways.

Coving is the simpler of the two and typically includes a central concave section that runs the length of the coving. There may be a bit of embellishment above and below this, but it's usually kept to a minimum.

Cornice work, on the other hand, can be quite detailed and elaborate, incorporating nature motifs, art deco motifs, geometric motifs and others to create a sense of opulence and luxury. There is no single aspect of cornice work you can point to as being typical. And it is often asymmetrical in that it may extend further out onto the ceiling or down the wall as the design requires.
