Distinguishing Between Coving & Cornice
The words "coving" and "cornice" are often used interchangeably. But the fact is, while the two both fulfil the function of providing an agreeable transition from wall to ceiling, they go about it in different ways.
Identifying coving
Coving and cornice are both used to create an appealing visual transition between the upper wall and ceiling. Coving is easily distinguished from cornice work because it tends to be very simple in design, often incorporating a central concave area that extends the distance of the coving. In some cases, the concavity may comprise almost the entire piece of coving. In other instances, it may be replaced by an equally simple flat area, or feature an egg and dart motif.
Identifying cornice
Cornice is distinguished by its elaborate, highly-detailed nature. Because of the complexity of its design, cornice work is usually the more expensive of the two options. From a design perspective, cornice work tends to be less rigid than coving and is often quite fanciful. It is typically employed to produce a sense of conspicuous luxury in historical homes, high-end hotels and other, similar settings. Unlike coving, it is not unusual for cornice work to extend quite far out over the ceiling or down the wall.
