Cornice and coving are types of decorative moulding that create a
visually agreeable transition between wall and ceiling. Cornices tend to be the
more ornate of the two, while coving embraces a simpler aesthetic. Still, some
coving can be quite detailed.

Ceiling roses are commonplace in older
homes, particularly Victorian homes. They occupy the centre point of the
ceiling and can be nearly a metre in diameter. In many cases, a large light
fixture will hang from the centre of the ceiling rose. In recent years, ceiling
roses have made something of a comeback.

Friezes are bands of ornate plasterwork
that occupy the area directly under coving or cornice work. They can be
extremely ornate depending on the particulars of the building and the
surrounding decor.

Decorative wall panels have been around
for centuries and were extensively used in places like the Palace of
Versailles. These days, they too have enjoyed a comeback, although today's
decorative panels tend to be less stiff than their older counterparts and more
expressive in nature.
