Are Coving & Cornice the Same Thing?

They are similar but not the same. The term coving is typically applied to moulding that extends an equal distance down the wall and out over the ceiling. When compared to cornice, coving tends to be simpler and is often formed around a quarter-circle shaped profile.

The cornice, on the other hand, is typically quite a bit more ornate and intended to exude a sense of grandeur. While it sometimes has a uniform drop and projection, most of the time these measurements are not the same. Far from the smooth profile of the coving the cornice may be quite ornate with a variety of patterns depending to some extent on the architectural style in play.
