Period Property Plaster Restoration

Older buildings often contain decorative plasterwork that is showing signs of wear and tear. Period property plaster restoration is the process of repairing that old plasterwork - typically using traditional methods and materials - and making sure the repair work is historically accurate and indistinguishable from the original plasterwork. The team at Keaneys have nearly 40 years of experience recreating vintage plasterwork, which is why we are the first choice of countless building owners.

The following are some of the key aspects of period property plaster restoration:

Period Property Plaster Restoration: What's Involved

Extensive research

We conduct extensive research to ensure the period plasterwork
we are recreating is historically accurate. If none of the original plasterwork
survives, we will seek out historical photos, notes of the original architect
and whatever else is available to ensure accuracy.

Repairing damage

Before we do anything, we conduct a thorough assessment of the
state of the remaining original plasterwork. If there are any moisture issues,
we correct them, and we carefully fill gaps, repair cracks and if necessary,
replace crumbling plaster.

The use of traditional materials

Period property plaster restoration performed using modern
materials and methods is bound to produce results that look a bit off. Over
time, that difference will likely increase. To avoid this, we use the same
materials and methods that were employed to create the original plasterwork.

Repairing lath and plasterwork

Many period properties have lath and plaster walls. This type of
wall is composed of thin strips of wood nailed to the wall joists with a thick
layer of plaster applied over them and smoothed out. Period property plaster
restoration sometimes involves restoring damaged lath and plasterwork to
enhance the integrity of the wall while retaining historical accuracy.
